Step back, and level out, empowering your team

Why letting go is key to scaling your business

As a CEO, you’ve likely mastered the art of growth and innovation to take your business from vision to reality, but to unlock true freedom you need a strategic plan to “level out” rather than “level up” in your business. Essentially, this means moving yourself from “central problem-solver” to “strategic overseer” who empowers others to lead. This shift can happen by delegating effectively, enhancing your emotional intelligence, shifting from problem-solving to mentoring, cultivating the right team, and stepping back. Only through strategic planning will your business grow beyond you, giving you the freedom to enjoy the fruits of your labor and the space to plan for what’s next.

Delegating Effectively

Start by analyzing your current role. Are you still dreaming about your ideal work-life balance, but not experiencing it? Well, if you keep dreaming of it and not doing anything about it then it is only going to remain a dream. Ask yourself: What tasks are keeping me tethered to the day-to-day? Then create a plan to delegate these responsibilities elsewhere. Delegation helps to build an infrastructure that operates seamlessly, whether or not you’re directly involved.

Enhancing Emotional Intelligence

Leading isn’t just about hitting targets, it’s about nurturing people. Thus, emotional intelligence is often a missing link in effective leadership. CEOs must create a culture of trust, empathy, and understanding. Take time to cultivate relationships with your team. Listen. Empathize. Encourage. If your team feels safe, they will bring greater levels of motivation, creativity, and accountability—which will in turn alleviate some of your fear or micromanaging habits that are keeping you from leveling out.

Shifting from Problem-Solving to Mentoring

Your role as CEO doesn’t mean you are in charge of solving all the problems; instead, you should be mentoring others so that they can solve them. When you want to go straight to “save the day” mode, pause and ask yourself, “How can I empower my team to take this on and solve this?” By giving your team this level of trust and responsibility, you are ensuring that the company can handle things when you are not physically there.

Cultivating the Right Team

Building a strong foundation includes having a team that fits with your envisioned culture and vision. It can’t just be about who has the skills; it needs to be about who is truly aligned. Hiring and retaining people with shared values ensures continuity in your absence. Thus, evaluate every hire. Ask yourself, “Are they elevating the team or simply filling a role?

Stepping Back

The final and perhaps hardest step is to begin putting this dream into action by stepping back. Create and follow your strategic plan. Trust the business. Trust your team. Trust the process. Allow yourself to not just read blogs like this for “ideas” but put those ideas to action. This is the beginning of you leveling out. And by doing so, you’re creating an environment where you can fully detach and know that your business is thriving with a capable team.
